Bolivia is not your run of the mill travel destination. To visit this country is to visit the true heart of South America. Where else can you see indigenous ladies wearing their traditional colorful layered dressed and bowler hats, a tropical paradise and snow-capped Andean mountains all in the course of one day?

La Paz is sure to leave you breathless in more than one respect. At 4000m it is not only the world’s highest capital, it also has the world’s highest commercial airport, and nearby is the world’s highest ski resort. Driving into the city from the airport, you will feel like driving down the rim of an extinct volcano… The city is surrounded by snowy mountain tops all year round.

One of La Paz’s top tourist destinations is the so-called witches market. Should you be looking for a Llama fetus to bury underneath your house for good luck, look no further. There are also numerous other markets. In the massive open air market of 16 de Julio you will be able to buy not only the latest electronics, but if that’s what you want you will also find a wireless reading device, a 5 piece drum set or one of the cute local musical instruments known as a rain pipe.

A visit to the La Paz coca museum is an absolute must. Many of your preconceptions about coca production will be quickly destroyed. You will for example learn that coca has been cultivated for centuries by the local Indians to use against altitude sickness, to make delicious herbal tea and for medicinal purposes.

You are most likely not aware that a certain soft drink used all over the world, not only contains the word coca in its name, but that it actually contained cocaine for many years. How much coca it really contained is sort of a trade secret, but it is known that this practice lasted deep into the 20th century.

The festival of Gran Poder is the biggest and best known festival in La Paz. It is held yearly during winter and draws more than 30 000 participants. It’s a truly world class extravaganza of costumes, music and dance lasting from about 9 in the morning to deep into the night – by which time most dancers must be half dead with exhaustion.

If you are lucky enough to have some good quality Alpine skiing equipment, why not take a day trip to nearby Chacaltaya, at 5400m the highest ski resort in the world. The top of the lift at Chacaltaya is at the same height as Everest base camp, so make sure that you are properly acclimatised to the high altitude before attempting to ski. For most people merely reading a book at this altitude leave them breathless.

When the year draws to an end, we all know the feeling of tiredness that can creep over you. A year is a long time. During the past year you have probably been through a lot of experiences. In the current economic downturn you might have developed financial problems. Perhaps you even had to use a debt consolidation service to help you get out of debt again. If you are a trader, you might have spent a year in front of a computer waiting for the one forex signal that will at last bring that perfect trade. At the end of the day the pressures of daily life get too much. You need to break away, to find your laptop bag and store away the laptop. To rejuvenate yourself in a way nothing else can do in quite the same way as traveling does.

If you have never tried it, traveling is without any doubt something you have to put on your bucket list. There is nothing else in the world that can take your mind away from the worries of daily life than three weeks in a place where people don’t understand your language. Where you will go hungry if you don’t learn to say hamburger in Spanish or rice in Chinese.

It’s exactly this element of ‘foreignness’ that will force you to live in the moment. To forget about everything back home and concentrate on the little old lady in front of you who are desperately trying to tell you something, but you don’t have a clue what.

You will meet new and interesting people. People who do things differently to what you are used to. They will still wear clothes, but the clothes will be a little different to what you wear at home. They will eat, maybe even the same food – but the recipes will be different. It won’t taste quite the same.

You will make many new friends. People who once again do things just that little differently to what you know. They might eat different food, or eat the same food but in a different way. They will probably wear different clothes, or perhaps the same as you, but a lot less of it.

All this will slowly open up your mind in a way very few other things ever did. You will be able to go back to your own country and look at it as a stranger.

You will be able to look at your own life from a distance and be able to understand what needs to be done to fix it. In a certain sense it might be disconcerting, but the fact of the matter is traveling will help you to gain perspective again.

Make Beats Like a Pro

27 March 2010

Whether you’re into soul or hip hop, still, the most definite path to branding yourself in the industry stays the same: you should create your beats while continuing on your own brand of music.

Naturally, the idea of making your own beats can be quite daunting. Still, you must do your best to see this as a challenge rather than allowing it to discourage you from pursuing your dreams.

Make Your Own Beats Count…Start by Mastering Your Genre

Of course, don’t take this advice to the extreme and challenge yourself into developing a totally new genre. While that is surely possible, you might need to broaden your repertoire a bit more before making that your goal. Meanwhile, there’s nothing wrong with devoting your time to polishing your skills and broadening your understanding of your chosen genre. Go ahead and dive into your friends’ works and see if that motivates you into forming your own music beats greater than before.

Dedicating your time to excel in your genre means you’re already ahead of other debuting music artists as well as boosting your abilities as a musician.

One great thing about today’s music industry is the improved accessibility to equipment . These days, it’s not necessary for you to purchase expensive technology for creating your own beats.

Creating the right beat for your music consists of three major components: midi drum patterns, audio loops, and bass line. These parts are used in virtually any kind of music possible so it’s vital that you’re completely aware of how they work and what they can provide to your music.

A music track’s bass line is its underlying frame. It consists of a set of music beats or notes that will be played from the beginning to end and which all other elements of the song would have to work with in order to keep a clear sense of harmony.

You can devote as much time as you want improving your bass line. If your bass line doesn’t work, the rest of the song won’t work either.

The second factor you have to consider is the audio loop. This is a common favorite among rap & hip hop creators. More often than not, they’re used for changing your music’s central theme or mood. To make one, simply mix a set of notes from musical instruments or any other source of sound. You can play and experiment however you want until you get the best set of beats.

And last but definitely not the least, make sure you create midi drum patterns which go well with the rest of the piece. You can use one set or pattern of notes or merge different sets. You can do anything as long as it is enhancing instead of detracting from your work.

At times, midi drum patterns are not patterns at all. Rather, they consist of an assorted set of beats but played as repeating loops as well as acting as something similar to a secondary tier of melody or beat.

To summarize: in making your beats, always start with building a compelling bass line to stand as your music’s foundation then solidifying it with equally well-developed audio loops and one or several midi drum patterns.

Are you geared up to make your beats? Then don’t let anything keep you from producing cool music for the world to hear.
