Every once in a while, I like to physically challenge myself by trying to do as many pushups and pull ups as possible. When you do these two exercises as part of a strength training workout, you’re combining the two essential exercise movements of pushing and pulling. Despite being so basic, it can be a challenge for people to increase pullups or increase pushups per session. I’d like to discuss the grease the groove technique that I learned from Pavel Tsatsouline’s The Naked Warrior.

There is a lot of background to get into, but first let me give it to you straight. You can improve your personal best for pullups, pushups, squats and bench presses just by using this amazing, beneficial technique called “Grease the Groove”.

What exactly is this? It means you have to perform a specific exercise over and over again to get better at it. As Pavel says, “if you want to get good at pull ups, why not try to do…a lot of pull ups?” The key is not training to failure. The best way to understand this technique is through example. If the most pullups you can do at a time is 10, then it’s best to train by doing 5-8 reps of pullups, 3-4 times per day, at least 4-6 times weekly. Heck, you could even hang a pull up bar in your doorway and just do 5 pull ups every time you walk through that door. That will give you plenty of practice!

What makes this approach so effective? Your muscles will gradually become more efficient at completing the movement when you perform repeated strength training. During this neurological process of getting more efficient, it becomes easier for your muscles to repeat that movement. So the more you do pushups or pullups, the better you will be able to do them. You can apply this technique to other strength training exercises as well. For example, the methodology works just as well to help you increase your squats or bench presses.

Try 1-2 exercises at a time as you learn to grease the groove. While I have personally made improvements by doing pushups and pullups during the same exercise, your best bet is to just focus on one exercise at a time when you get started. Basically, to be successful at this, you should aim for doing 50-80% of the maximum number of reps you can handle. And while you can do these any time of the day, it’s best to stick with 3-4 times – morning, noon and evening, and before you go to bed. By doing pushups or pullups as often as possible, you will gradually get better at them. You repeat the whole process again the next day. Remembering to always quit at least 1 rep short of muscle failure. This prevents you from sending the signal to your muscles to fail.

For whatever reason, if you’re looking to increase pull ups or increase pushups or even increase bench press or squats, just remember the old adage: practice makes perfect. And with the grease the groove to help you, you will soon discover that your strength is improving and you’re getting closer to your exercise goal.
