The world’s eighth largest airline, Emirates Airlines is based in Dubai, capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Since the company was founded in 1985, it has grown to serve 92 destinations in 55 countries around the world. Although it does not offer domestic service, Emirates is nonetheless the leading air carrier of the Middle East and enjoys large market share in Southeast Asia. Emirates Airlines is one of only six carriers in the world to operate a fleet consisting entirely of wide-body aircraft built by Boeing and Airbus.

Emirates also stands out among carriers in that it has been reliably profitable, posting only one loss in the last 24 years. Its sales growth has stayed above 20 per cent a year, doubling every three and one-half years between 1985 and 1996, and doubling every four years since. It maintains a lean, efficient work force that gives it the competitive advantages of a low-cost carrier, and it also benefits by its association with the Arab Air Carriers Association. Founded in 1965 by the Arab League, the Arab Air Carriers Association is open to any airline based in a member state, and seeks to promote cooperation, quality travel service, and safety among all its member airlines.

Emirates Airlines is owned and operated by the Dubai government, but the government does not invest money into the airline, nor does the government meddle in airline affairs, allowing the airline to function as an independent company. This arrangement seems to work well for both the airline and the government, as the airline is consistently profitable and continues to grow.

Emirates Airlines also runs a cargo carrier, Emirates SkyCargo. Also based at Dubai International Airport, Emirates SkyCargo functions like a passenger airline. It operates nine aircraft, and also uses the cargo capacity of the passenger fleet.

Emirates was the second carrier to place the Airbus A380 into service, accepting delivery in July 2008. Emirates Airlines flies the A380 between Dubai and JFK (New York) and Heathrow (London), and also on its flights to Australia and New Zealand.

Although Emirates’ only hub is at Dubai International Airport, it flies to over 100 destinations in 56 countries. The company has agreements with the aviation authorities in Australia and Singapore that allow it to fly from their countries to even farther-flung destinations around the world.

Frequent fliers enjoy the benefits of Skywards, allowing them to earn or spend frequent flier miles on Emirates or any of its Skywards partners, including Korean Air, Japan Airlines, United, South African Airways, Jet Airways, Continental, Kingfisher Airlines, and Virgin Blue.

Emirates also has a stake in Dnata, one of the premier travel service organizations in the Middle East. Dnata has over 6,500 employees who take care of cargo, ramp, technical, and passenger services at Dubai International Airport.

Emirates Airlines, Emirates SkyCargo, and Dnata all belong to the Emirates Group, an international holding company with headquarters in Dubai. The airline alone employs about 35,000 workers.

Based in Houston, Texas, Continental Airlines has hubs at Houston Intercontinental near Houston, Texas, at Newark, New Jersey, and at Cleveland, Ohio. Continental is the fourth largest airline in the USA, flying to destinations in North America, Mexico, Central and South America, Europe, Australia, Micronesia, and Australia. This airline offers over 6,000 departures every day to hundreds of domestic and international destinations, and employees nearly 83,000 workers.

Frequent fliers will want to know that Continental is a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, currently partnering with Delta, Northwest, Air France, Aeromexico, KLM, and Alitalia. In October 2009, however, Continental plans to discontinue its travel membership in SkyTeam in order to joint Star Alliance. Joining Star Alliance will permit Continental to work more closely with United Airlines, with which it has been in merger talks since 2006. For the immediate future, however, Continental plans to focus on its upcoming membership in the Star Alliance.

The airline offers a frequent flyer program called OnePass, which also operates on flights with Copa Airlines and Aero Republica.  Members can also earn OnePass miles via Amtrak due to Continental’s partnership with the rail company.  In addition, Continental also offers frequent flyer benefits to the airlines in the Star Alliance.

Continental was founded in 1931 in El Paso, Texas as Varney Speed Lines. It offered service to and from El Paso and destinations in New Mexico and Colorado and also to Las Vegas. As the early carrier expanded its routes, it changed its name to Continental in 1937.

Continental is a pioneer in the lower fare moment, introducing its first coach fares in 1962. It has been flying to Europe since 1985.

Continental Airlines was also the first American airline to hire an African-American pilot, in 1963, as well as the first U.S. carrier successfully to fly through bankruptcy.

Continental recently achieved yet another first with the first biofuel-powered flight by any commercial airline in the U.S. The fuel for the flight was a fuel oil blend extracted from jatrophra seeds and algae. Continental plans to continue working with biofuels, as part of its comprehensive effort to reduce its carbon footprint. Every passenger on Continental gets an opportunity to buy carbon offsets for as little as two dollars a ticket, the money used to restore deforested areas. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has honored Continental for its continuing efforts at greener transportation.

Every Continental jet is made by Boeing—737, 757, 767, or 777. Continental plans to add the Boeing Dreamliner 787 to its fleet in the next several years. Boeing has had an exclusive agreement with Continental to build its aircraft since 1990, although the European Commission found that the contract was void when Boeing acquired rival McDonnell Douglas in 1997. Continental continues, however, to get all its jets from Boeing.

Like every other airline, Continental has struggled with its finances. It reported losing millions of dollars in 2008 due to fuel costs and funding needs for retired pilots.

Documentation is an important part of your trip while traveling outside the US.  Beyond the borders of the US and even your own state you and your luggage are identified by your documents.  Carrying proper documents and proof of identity are a necessary step in ensuring a good trip.

The best bit of travel advice when travelling internationally is to carry an original copy of some of your documents while keeping one or two photocopies of the other or others just in case.  Also, leave a copy of your documentation with friends, which they can fax to you in the event that yours become lost.  Also, ask your travel agent or friends who’ve travelled to the same destinations if they have any advice on documentation.

To enter or leave most foreign countries, a valid U.S. passport is a requirement. For American citizens seeking information or attempting to acquire a new passport or replace one, the Passport Service Office would be the place to go. If attempting to obtain a passport for the first time you must physically go to a passport acceptance facility carrying two photographs, certification that you are a U.S. citizen and valid photo identification like a drive’s license and apply. You may ask your associates who have travel to your intended destinations advice in terms of what documents you may need.

A valid U.S. passport is required to enter and leave most foreign countries. The passport Services office provides information and services to American citizens about how to obtain, replace or change a passport. To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to passport acceptance facilities with your two photographs, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as driver’s license and apply for the passport. You can seek travel tips for documents from your friends and acquaintances that have traveled to those destinations.

A Visa is a document issued by a country’s government that allows the bearer to enter or leave a host country. Most countries require a visa before you can travel there.  You cannot board an aircraft unless you have a valid visa and return ticket, and few countries allow US citizens free passage without a visa.  It is necessary as valid proof of identification and should be carried with you at all times in case of an emergency.  A visa requires a visit to the destination country’s embassy or nearest consulate.  For some countries the visa application takes some time to process, so it’s necessary to apply for a visa well in advance to avoid last minute problems.

When carrying valuable or electronic items it is a good idea to keep a copy of the invoice, any insurance, as well as the operating manuals when traveling.  The invoice and insurance serve as proof of ownership while the manuals come in handy with technicians if a problem occurs with the equipment.  These documents also enable you to take advantage of international warranties and service locations.

Most countries require the foreign tourists covered up with insurance before they enter the country. However, insurance during travel is a critical issue due to legal differences between two countries. Contact your insurance company to find if the present insurance covers the foreign trips or not. Even your travel agent can help you with important travel insurance tips.
