The USA Passport Application Process Made Easy

May 20, 2010

Normally, passports are used at checkpoints when an individual is traveling internationally. When it comes to passports, there are two kinds for which a person can apply. One is the passport booklet. The other is the passport card. It does not matter which one an individual is applying for, as far as filling out a US passport application goes. Both forms of passports require an individual to fill out the proper paperwork.

With the passport card, an individual will not be allowed to fly to his or her destination. This is just a rule the government has made. The booklet, however, will work for all international travel, which is why it is more expensive. The booklet will work as its own wallet, while the card will conveniently fit into any wallet, since it is similar to a driver’s license.

The passport application application that most people need to fill out is Form DS-11. This is used for individuals who are looking to get this documentation for the first time. These individuals need to make a visit to a specifically mandated government facility that falls under the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, Office of Passport Services and Customer Service.

Usually, local post offices have the ability to perform the passport processing. The only way an individual can know for sure, though, is to go online and check. Once online too, an individual will be able to electronically fill out the proper form. The individual also has the option to print out the appropriate form and complete it using a pen.

With Form DS-11, an individual will need to provide evidence of U.S. citizenship, an original copy of primary identification, a copy of that primary identification, two copies of one photograph, and the financial means to pay for the fees. There are specific stipulations that are required for each of these, so it would be wise for individuals to check online to see what these stipulations are.

Form DS-82 is for the individuals who will be mailing their application in to the appropriate offices. Only individuals renewing their passport can do this. There are other very specific guidelines that one must follow in order to have to mail in the application, so it would be best for individuals to check online and see if they meet the requirements.

Neither DS form is difficult to fill out, but they will take a decent amount of time, so put on a some tea or coffee, get a pen, and find a comfortable seat. The forms will ask questions about age and birthday as well as minor family history. Those filling out Form DS-11 should not sign the form until they are standing in front of the agent who will process the order.

Other than fees, an individual really has no reason not to have a passport. It is a form of identification accepted in many locations where a form of identification is needed. In addition, since the pass port application process is not that difficult, there really is no excuse not to go through it. You’ll have your passport in no time.
