What Makes A Good Camping Mattress?

Feb 14, 2010

Camping mattresses are no longer available in standard weights and in only a few colours.  There are lots of different types on the market, but what type should you buy and what are the important things to think about before buying a camping mattress? Objectives issues for consideration are raised in this article, prior to buying.

Most camping mattresses that you buy now are of exceptional quality.Over the last few years the world of camping mattressess has evolved significanlty; very cheap and thin camping mattresses can still be found on the market but they do very little in terms of providing warmth and comfort.  Camping mattresses are now a multi-million pound industry and if you want luxury, then luxury you will have!

Before you splash out on one of the top of the range mattessess there are some basic things to consider. If there are two of you and your tent is very quaint and your mattress is larger than the standard then your quaint little tent will suddenly feel very small indeed.  So make sure that any mattresses that you buy will easily fit into your tents for camping.

Inflatable mattresses are very popular currently, but you need to have a means of inflating them.Comfort is essential when camping so the fact that you are effectively supported by air equals a pleasurable camping trip!  For those who are a little lazier, self-inflating mattresses are also available but these tend to be a little more expensive.

A good camping mattress should protect you from the cold or dampness, so really the thicker the mattress the better.Lying on a thin mattress could mean that you will feel the cold more.  You may also find that you are pretty stiff the next morning, so thickness is a prime consideration whilst taking account of the space it will take up.

One very important issue is space.More thought needs to go into your packing process if you are travelling by bicycle or on foot as you really don’t really want to be carrying heavy thick mattressess and a pump; weight restrictions will be zero of course, if you are travelling by car?the weight of the mattress also has to be considered.

So a good mattress is dependent on a number of factors, balancing comfort, thickness, weight and how you are travelling.  Do not be fooled into buying a mattress that is super de luxe, but you find it takes up the whole of your rucksack, just get what is right for you.
